The sole purpose of the backswing is to set the golf club at the top of the backswing in a
position that will enable you to swing the golf club into the back of the golf ball with the
maximum amount of clubhead speed. After you have addressed the golf ball and you are ready to start
the backswing, the clubhead must swing back on an arc. As the clubhead swings back the right
shoulder must turn out of the way to give the golf club a place to swing to at the top. When you
reach the top of the backswing the shaft of the golf club must aim towards your target.
